A former Wingham resident is among the convoy leaving camps that housed evacuees from the Fort McMurray fires.
1,500 vehicles are moving south from the camps.
Craig Picton says despite moving at a crawl, the people who he's talked with are in good spirits considering the circumstances.
"We were all treated extremely well at the camps. In that respect everyone is really healthy. They're happy as far as their welfare goes. Obviously the building process comes but as far as state of mind, everyone wants to get home to Calgary or Edmonton or wherever they're going," says Picton.
But they are still exhausted.
"It's just mentally exhausting because it's all you are thinking about 24/7. You're thinking about what your next steps are," says Picton.
There are also check points with fuel tankers to help keep the vehicles filled with gas.
