Donors to the United Way Bruce Grey Fire Fund support putting surplus funds from the August 10 blaze toward a broader disaster fund.
The United Way says a poll of donors found 95% support, while 2.9% were against the idea of a new disaster fund.
735 people responded to the poll, which is a 70% return.
“It is clear from the responses that our donors understand the value of having a broader disaster fund,” says United Way Executive Director Francesca Dobbyn. “Some highlighted the recent floods in Williamsford as an example of where this assistance could have had a major impact on our community.”
The poll results and documentation now have to go through the court system to have the fund formally expanded to include future community disasters.
The United Way continues to engage victims of the August 10 fire, and provides advocacy or additional funds where needed.
The United Way received over $318,000 to support more than 50 people affected by the early morning fires last summer.
Over $80,000. remains in the fund.
