'Vaccines save lives' is the message from the Grey Bruce Health Unit to mark this as National Immunization Awareness Week.
Sarah Ellis is program manager of vaccine preventable diseases at the health unit. She says vaccines are safe, effective, and prepares your body to fight diseases, for young and old alike.
"And it's important for people to continue to get vaccinated because we don't see diseases like we used to. We don't see polio or smallpox or any of those diseases so much any more because we do have such a high immunization rate," says Ellis.
She says 96 percent of Grey Bruce residents with school-aged children believe that immunizing children protects them from disease.
It's estimated vaccines save 3 million lives worldwide every year.
