SVCA Marks Earth Day In Elmwood

The effort to keep our rivers healthy was the subject of a workshop in Elmwood marking Earth Day.

Representatives of conservation authorities, community groups and consultants shared ideas on river rehabilitation, bank stabilization, tree planting and funding opportunities.

The event was put on by the Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority.

The conservation authority's Jo-Anne Harbinson says we're all stakeholders when it comes to our rivers.

"We're all drawn to water from our early age to our old age, it's so much part of our lives. We want to make sure we can maintain the health of our systems and rehabilitate where we can," says Harbinson.

Harbinson says factors adversely affecting our rivers include nutrient runoff, septic systems, and urban pavement.

She says while we can never completely restore rivers to their original state, we can take action to make them as clean and healthy as possible.
