Huron East Council Still Questioning OPP Policing Costs

Huron East councillors didn't get the answers they were looking for from a presentation by the OPP regarding the increase in their policing costs.

Mayor Bernie MacLellan says they were hoping to get an explanation that they could present to ratepayers that would justify the cost increase.

MacLellan says costs for policing in Huron East went up by $190,000 this year, and while the level of service is very good, it hasn't changed significantly from last year.

It was noted in the presentation that the structure had been changed because some counties were paying more than they should have in the past while others were paying less than their fair share. However, councillors didn't feel that fully explained the increase in Huron East.

MacLellan also says in the past there had been a reconciliation for calls that were not required at the end of the year, and that was usually a considerable windfall for the municipality.  He says the municipality is not seeing the refunds it had in the past.
