Electric Cars Increasing in Popularity

The recent announcement by Tesla that they were introducing a new line of electric cars set an all-time record for pre-orders of automobiles with over 125,000 orders in 24 hours.

Christopher Misch, vice president of charger manufacturer Sun Country Highways, says he believes electric cars are about to take off.

Misch says the sudden interest has sparked a lot of discussion about the ability of the grid to handle the extra demand of so many electric cars on the road but he doesn't think it will be a problem for several years.

Misch points out 95% of electric cars are charged at night when demand is low so it should be an issue.

Another concern has been the time it takes to charge a vehicle, but Misch expects to see a lot more level three chargers put in place and he calls that a super charger that can charge a car to 80% in 20 to 30 minutes.

Misch adds as the popularity of electric cars increases he also expects to see the cost of both the cars and the chargers come down.
