Bruce County Creating Economic Development Position With Bruce Power

Bruce County council and Bruce Power want the rest of the nuclear industry to know they are open for business.

The two sides are finalizing the creation of a joint economic development position aimed at attracting more nuclear industry companies to Bruce County.

Warden Mitch Twolan says it's the perfect time to create the position, with Bruce Power set to embark on a six-unit refurbishment project over the next 15-to-20 years.

He says the refurbishment of the Bruce Power site will create thousands of jobs, both directly on-site as well as off-site, and they want as many of those jobs to be located in Bruce County as possible.

"It was definitely time to go out there, this is a multi-billion dollar project over multi-years, so any way we can work collaboratively with Bruce Power to promote bringing more business [to Bruce County], that's what the whole objective of this position is," says Twolan.

The economic development position is proposed to be hired on a contract basis, running through the end of 2018, with the county and Bruce Power sharing the costs.
