Agnes Macphail Nomination Gaining Support

Southgate will join other Grey County municipalities in nominating political pioneer Agnes Macphail to be the first woman to have her picture on Canadian paper money.

West Grey and Grey Highlands have also supported Macphail's nomination.

Southgate is urging local residents to vote for Macphail through the Southgate or Grey County website before the April 15 deadline.

Anges Macphail was born and raised near Dundalk, and was the first Canadian woman elected to the House of Commons, holding office from 1921 to 1940.

After her time in federal politics, she was elected to the Ontario Legislature where she initiated the first pay equity campaign.
