Bill For Roadside Worker Safety Awaiting Approval

The President of the Bluewater Recycling Association is asking member municipalities to support a private member's bill that would protect employees while they are collecting waste at the side of the road.

Francis Veilleux explains under current legislation drivers are required to slow down and move into an adjacent lane whenever possible before passing a police officer at the side of the road.   That same legislation also applies to things like transit buses and construction workers, but the private members bill would see that expanded to cover most workers working at the side of the road, including waste collection workers and snow plow operators.

Veilleux says Bluewater Recycling employees have not been involved in any serious incidents yet, but they have had drivers run into the back of the trucks.   He says his goal is to see the legislation passed before there is a serious incident.

Goderich councillors voted to support the private member's bill.
