It's been two years since Big Brother and Big Sisters of Hanover & Bruce-Grey folded, and now a new group is looking to fill the void and bring a similar service to local children.
Formed in 2015, Bruce Grey Mentorship wants to help local children and youth build confidence, develop social skills and increase self-esteem.
With an initial developed budget of $70,000 the group currently does not have enough funding to get off the ground so they're looking for support from local community partners as well as Hanover council.
"Right now we have very minimal funding so we're looking to develop our funding in contributors, sponsors so that we can become a self-sustainable organization," says Greg Dow, BGM's consulting director.
Dow says there is currently a void in the community and says he's spoken with numerous people about the need for such youth mentoring programs in the community.
"I know a number of families in the community that definitely see a lack since the program [Big Brothers & Big Sisters] left, we also do get the occasional inquiry at our new program already," adds Dow.
While council was very supportive of the group, Hanover Mayor Sue Paterson says no decision can be made at this point until they review the formal business plan, at which time discussion will go back before council.
