Mid Huron Landfill To Close in 2018

The current users of the Mid Huron Landfill site in Holmesville are going to have to find a new landfill site within the next two years.

The projected date for the closure of the Mid Huron site is spring of 2018.

Board Secretary Larry McCabe explains they considered a few options, including converting the site into a transfer station, but determined that wasn't feasible.

They are seriously looking at converting the site to a recycling depot that would handle hazardous waste as it does now, as well as things like shingles, construction materials, steel and electronic waste.

So far Goderich, Huron East and Central Huron would use that recycling depot, but the door would be open for other municipalities.

McCabe points while the six current users of the site would still have to pay post-closure fees for the next fifty years, and once the Mid Huron site closes it will not receive normal waste from any municipality.

Goderich, Bluewater, Central Huron, Huron East, Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh, and Huron-Kinloss current use the Mid Huron site.
