Information Sessions On Nuclear Waste

Huron-Kinloss, South Bruce and Central Huron are 3 of the 9 communities in Canada that are still in the information gathering stage as Nuclear Waste Management Ontario, or NWMO, researches the posibility of a DGR for spent fuel.

The other six communities are in northern Ontario.

Tonight, a lead advisor from the U.S. will be making a presentation in Ripley about the current process.

Tom Isaacs was part of the Blue Ribbon Commission on America's nuclear future. He's also watched what's gone on in Finland and Sweden who are considered leaders in nuclear fuel waste disposal.

Isaacs says one of the keys to the process is Adaptive Phased Management.

"The waste program takes many, many years, decades to unfold. And the world changes over that time. Science and technology advances, values in communities advance, economic conditions change, political conditions change," says Isaacs. "So when you lay out a program you have a goal in mind but that goal may be several generations out."

Isaacs says while some countries have an advantage of size, space and rock, other countries are struggling.

"Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, being examples of countries who rely heavily on nuclear power but have very little land mass. They don't have the luxury that the U.S. and Canada do of looking for sites."

Isaacs says granite and sedimentary rock are viable options for a DGR and Canada has both.

Tonight's meeting is at the council chambers in Ripley at 7pm. Isaacs will also be speaking Thursday night in Mildmay at the community centre at 7pm.
