MVCA Weighing Options For Falls Reserve Conservation Area

A conservation area coordinator with the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority says they're looking at a number of options for the Falls Reserve Conservation Area.

Stewart Lockie explains several infrastructure upgrades are needed at the park but the authority's focus is on flood and erosion control and stewardship, so in 2013 they hired a consultant to look at the park and come up with options.

Lockie says one option was to turn it into a best-in-class campground and that carried a price tag of $1.7-million.

Another option was leasing the campground to someone who would operate it but there was no interest in the private sector for that. Lockie says staff are now looking at two other options.

One would see the park operate with reduced services and see if that could be done in a way that would still bring in the necessary revenue for future infrastructure upgrades and the other is operating the park as a days-only facility.

Lockie says they hope to have a decision sometime this spring but adds the 2016 season will be business as usual.
