Another local community has put itself in the running for the title of Kraft Hockeyville. The Southampton Coliseum has been nominated for the competition, which includes a grand prize of $100,000 in arena upgrades and the opportunity to host an NHL pre-season game.
Saugeen Shores Councillor Don Matheson is a Southampton native and played both junior and senior hockey at the Coliseum and says the 39-year old building needs help meeting current accessibility standards.
"It's going to need some upgrades. Our dressing rooms go downstairs, they're not accessible. We have a beautiful "green room" overlooking the ice that isn't accessible, so we've got to make the arena more accessible for everybody," says Matheson.
With thousands of communities nominated across the country, Matheson admits it will be a tall task to have the Coliseum make it through to the end, but says it's certainly possible.
He says the community needs to go on social media and use #khv_southamptoncoliseum to make sure the Southampton Coliseum catches the eye of the judges, who will cut down to a top-10 list on March 5th.
