Environment Canada has released its Weather Review for the month of January.
With record warm temperatures recorded in both December and January, officials say we're in for the coldest temperatures of the season yet beginning this week.
Weather Preparedness Meteorologist, Peter Kimbell, says the mercury will drop mid week and by the weekend we'll be into much colder temperatures throughout the region.
"Wednesday night will be significantly colder than tonight, low minus 13 or so on Wednesday night and that's the first wave of cold air," says Kimbell.
The second blast of cold arctic air will hit the region closer to the weekend.
"The second wave of cold air comes on Friday when we dip even colder. Saturday we have high of minus 17 and we haven't seen a lot of cold air like that at all this year," adds Kimbell.
Kimbell says the mercury could drop as low as minus 23 C on Saturday.
The months of December 2015 and January 2016 have certainly been much milder with record warm temperatures bringing to much of southwestern Ontario heavy snowfall in areas.
Snowsquall activity dropped heavy amounts of snow throughout Midwestern Ontario with the hardest hit areas being Wingham (60cm), Clifford (53) and Palmerston (50cm).
