Wellington OPP Warn Of Latest Phone Scam

Wellington County OPP are warning residents about a new phone scam.

A woman in a neighbouring county received a phone call from from a male caller with an East Indian accent. She was then transferred to a female, provided a case number, and told there was a warrant for her arrest.

She was told to either attend the local RCMP detachment immediately, or face arrest on an immigration warrant. She told the caller she would go to the RCMP, but suspecting a scam, she did not leave the home.

A short while later she heard noises and voices near the garage door, and scared off three men, who left in a silver minivan.

Wellington County OPP would like to remind the public that Canada Immigration and the police do not operate in this manner.

If you suspect that something just isn’t sitting right, take the time to investigate it yourself. If there is an immigration issue, you should have received prior written knowledge about it and not just a cold phone call telling you that you need to respond immediately. If you’re not sure, call police.
