Hanover Trims Numbers Ahead of 2016 Budget

With the 2016 budget looming, Hanover Council reviewed some numbers at a special budget meeting Monday night.

A report from Hanover's Director of Corporate Services initially called for an overall levy increase of $779,000, or just over 14 per-cent,  but after some discussion - some trimming was done.

That proposed levy was reduced by roughly $350,000.

"We've been able to eliminate the deficit carry-over from 2015 of $100,000; we've been able to utilize some reserves of $80,000 to cover one time expenses in operations, we've cut the amount being transferred to reserves and reserve funds for future infrastructure in half," says Christine Walker.

Walker adds an extra $100,000 dollar cut was also made on the capital budget through projects being deferred through the following year.

As for impact on residents, the average household in Hanover can expect to see an increase of roughly $35 a year based on a property assessed at $195,786.

That means annual tax rate would go up from $1,465.04 (2015) to $1,500.35 (2016).

Walker says they also managed to reduce the police budget portion from operational costs from 40 down to 35 per-cent or $100,000.
