The Co-Chair of a committee called Building Bridges to Our Future addressed Huron East council recently with a request for funding for a three-part project at the Maitland River Elementary School and F-E Madill Secondary School in Wingham.
Carrie Anne Cameron explains the first part is an upgrade to the track and sports field at the high school. Cameron points out that hasn't been done in over thirty years and it's reached the point where there are safety concerns for the students. She adds they also want to create an accessible patch from the elementary school to the field.
The second phase is a nature area between the high school and the elementary school. She explains they want to plant some specific gardens in the area and create an environmental learning area for students at both schools.
Cameron says the last part of the project is to create a new playground at the elementary school. Part of that has already been done, but they're waiting for a large play structure that will be wheelchair accessible so students as well as area residents can use it.
Cameron points out F-E Madill students currently have to travel to other venues for track and field meets because their field is not usable, so being able to host meeting at their own school would be very positive.
She says the cost of the upgrade to the field is estimated to be about 500-thousand dollars so they're working on several fund-raising events as well as grant applications.
