Wintry Blast Wreaks Havoc on Regional Roads

Severe winter weather pounded most of Midwestern Ontario on Monday wreaking havoc on roads and highways throughout the region.

Blowing snow and squalls caused whiteout conditions and near zero visibility in many areas.

Emergency officials responded to a multi-vehicle collision on Highway 23 just north of Listowel on Monday afternoon, forcing the closure of the Highway as far north as Palmerston and south to Mitchell due to extremely poor driving and weather conditions.

Howick Township was forced to stop the operation of snowplows Monday afternoon due to safety reasons.

"They couldn't see anything; I had one in the ditch and the other guys couldn't see so we pulled them," says Ray Wilson, Public Works Supervisor for Howick Township.

Emergency crews also responded to an accident earlier in the day along Highway 8 near Seaforth, forcing the closure of that highway between Roxboro Line and Kinburn Line for several hours.
