Bruce Power has begun the $116 million planned maintenance and inspection program on Unit 8 at Bruce B.
The 822 megawatt unit was taken off line Friday, and after producing power for more than 100 consecutive days.
The unit is expected to return to service in the second quarter of 2016
Bruce B Senior Vice President Pierre Pilon says they plan includes about 24,000 tasks which will see maintenance on nearly every system in the unit.
The shutdown also provides workers with a chance to remove cobalt-60 from the unit, which will be eventually used to sterilize disposable medical supplies.
Cobalt-60 is supplied to over 200 gamma irradiators in 55 countries that sterilize surgical gloves, gowns masks, syringes, sutures, catheters, pharmaceuticals, implants and tissue, as well as several products used in the food and consumer products industries.
