Managing shoreline erosion was the major focus of Friday's meeting of Huron County's Water Protection Steering Committee.
Maitland Valley Conservation Authority's Flood and Erosion Safety Services Co-ordinator Steve Jackson says they urge shoreline property owners to contact their conservation authority before going too far with shoreline projects.
Jackson points out one of the fairly common practices is removing trees along the top of a bluff to get a better view of the lake but he explains those trees help to hold the bluff in place and removing them can de-stabilize the bluff.
He adds most attempts to control erosion will have some impact on the shoreline further down the lake and that could be moving erosion down the shoreline or holding sediment that provides beaches down the shoreline.
Jackson says projects should not be undertaken in isolation.
Property owners should be looking at the larger picture and be working with their neighbours and with their local conservation authority.
