Influenza A has arrived in Grey Bruce for this season.
The first lab confirmed case has been reported in southern Grey County.
It's been a quiet flu season so far, with just 279 lab confirmed cases across Ontario from September up until January 2. That's compared to over 1,000 cases last year between September and early January.
Flu symptoms include headache, chills and cough, followed by fever, muscle aches, fatigue, a runny nose, sneezing and throat irritation.
Between 4,000 and 8,000 Canadians die each year from complications of influenza and about 20,000 people with the flu are hospitalized.
The health unit says the best protection is the flu shot. You should also wash your hands often.
Contain your cough by covering your mouth with your sleeve, not your hand.
If feeling unwell, stay home and rest.
If sick, don’t visit a loved one in a hospital or long-term care facility. With weakened immune systems, the elderly and those in hospital are more at risk of developing serious complications from influenza that are life threatening.
