Bruce Power Donates To United Way Refugee Fund

Bruce Power is contributing a significant amount of money to make sure Syrian refugees arriving in the area have support services available.

The company announced it is putting up $50,000 as part of a new fund with the United Way of Bruce-Grey to help with what is expected to be a sudden influx of refugees to the area.

United Way of Bruce-Grey Executive Director Francesca Dobbyn says there's few resettlement services in our area.

"We're already starting to work on pulling together a plan to roll out these funds into our community, there may be an opportunity for matching grants from government agencies, so this gives us a real kick-start on that support structure for those refugees that are coming in," says Dobbyn.

She says there's no real way to know how many refugees will permanently settle in the area, but adds the fund will help provide support for both privately sponsored refugees, as well as those who will be temporarily housed in Meaford.

Dobbyn says the United Way of Bruce-Grey will provide $10,000 worth of in-kind support to go along with the Bruce Power donation.
