Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson has returned home from climate talks in Paris.
Thompson tells CKNX that many dignitaries were curious as to why Ontario is going with cap and trade to help reduce emissions; some of them warning her that such an approach is very difficult to make work.
Thompson says the consensus among many foreign dignitaries at the summit was to be careful with cap and trade because it's not only very complex, it opens up the door to fraud.
"European countries have tried it, found it to be very complex, they also found that it was an opportunity for fraud to occur and they really questioned why Ontario's going that route," says Thompson. "It didn't matter whether I was speaking to people in France, Switzerland, Scandinavia, Morocco, Abu Dabi, they were saying be careful."
Thompson adds with the recent Auditor General's Report that found so many things wrong with the current government; she says it's hard to trust them to implement a complicated cap and trade scheme.
Thompson also says she was impressed to see just how important agriculture was during the talks at the COP21 Summit in Paris, France.
