Saugeen Shores Delays Decision on Splash Pad Funding

Saugeen Shores council is not quite ready to write a cheque for a splash pad in Port Elgin.

Council is being asked to fund one-third of an estimated $400,000 price tag for the splash pad tentatively proposed for the Port Elgin waterfront, but decided to defer a decision until budget talks in January.

Councillor Mike Myatt says council has not seen a staff report yet on the fine details of the proposal, such as an exact location at the waterfront, or amenities like washrooms and he wants to see those things worked out before pledging tax dollars.

Amy Shute is the spokesperson for the committee of residents who have been raising funds for the splash pad and says it's discouraging that council is hesitant to step up with funds.

"We've talked to various committees, we've talked to council multiple times, we've talked to staff many times, we've got amazing community support and we still, after everything that council and staff has asked, have no commitment," says Shute.

She says they have raised about $125,000 so far, but adds the committee will wait until after the budget meeting to decide what their next move will be.

Council did agree to waive rental fees for the committee's New Years Eve fundraising event, which Shute says is a positive step.

The next Saugeen Shores budget meeting is scheduled for January 18th.
