AMDSB Students Benefit From iPads

A pilot project by the Avon Maitland District School Board to distribute computer tablets to all of its grade seven and eight students is being called a success.

Director Ted Doherty explains the feeling several years ago was that providing the devices would improve so-called 21st century skills like creativity and collaboration.   A staff presentation at a recent board meeting seems to confirm that is the case.

Doherty says early research indicates the students are using the technology to enhance their communication skills.

He points out they collaborate more on-line, both in the classroom and outside of school, critical thinking has improved, and all of the student outcomes have been enriched by the use of technology.

Doherty adds their biggest responsibility is to prepare students to leave the school system and enter the workforce, and he believes helping them become comfortable with technology in a way that enhances their learning is a big part of that.
