Bluewater Struggling With Projected OPP Costs

Councillors in the Municipality of Bluewater are investigating every possible alternative to the current OPP policing model.

Mayor Tyler Hessel says the new OPP billing model will more than double the policing costs for Bluewater over the next four years.

Hessel explains they've considered trying to work together with their neighbouring municipalities, but he points out that both South Huron and Central Huron actually save money under the new billing system, so they're not likely going to be interested in any kind of merger.

Hessel adds the new system clearly works better for urban centres than it does for rural communities, but he also adds those urban centres had been paying more than rural communities in the past.

Hessel says Bluewater will continue to look for alternatives, with an eye to what Huron County might do in the future.
