The United Way of Bruce Grey is exploring the best way to use a surplus of money raised for victims of an arson spree in Owen Sound in August. The United Way says its already distributed over $175,000. to the people affected by the fires. The United Way has about $95,000. left over. The United Way will continue to give the money to the fire victims for further qualifying requests.
The organization will seek input from residents, and from Canada Revenue Agency. One idea is to turn the fund into one that would be available for future fire victims. The United Way Fire Fund is a registered Charity with Canada Revenue Agency, and funds are limited to replacing personal property and addressing urgent needs. The CRA does not permit the United Way to simply divide the money up.
According to the United Way, the total raised was just shy of $320,000. 15% of that went towards administration costs to manage the fund, totalling $48,000.
The United Ways says the industry standard for administration costs is 20%.
