Huron Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson is joining the Canadian delegation at the Climate Summit in Paris.
She says she wants to see where the province positions itself at the talks, and will focus on the planned cap and trade program for carbon.
"The government is determined to introduce a Cap and Trade program in 2017, and given this government's past blunders, I worry their cap-and-trade scheme may end up like eHealth, Ornge or their botched Green Energy Plan," says Thompson. "If we are going to do this, we need to get it right. I want to learn from other jurisdictions what worked, and what had to be fixed when the European cap-and-trade process failed the first time".
Thompson says the government has made a few blunders in the past, and she says Ontario could avoid some of the mistakes first made through the European Cap and Trade process.
"Climate and environment issues affect us all, whether we live here in Ontario, in China or the United Kingdom. It is imperative that we all take part in the discussion," says Thompson. "I plan to observe the conference proceedings and monitor the tone and position the Ontario government sets on the world stage".
This year's conference is anticipated to attract close to 50,000 participants including 25,000 official delegates from government, intergovernmental organisations, UN agencies, NGOs and civil society.
