Derby School Parents Ready To Fight Accommodation Review

Derby School parents are not giving up the fight to save their school.

Many will be at the first accommodation review committee meeting for Owen Sound and area schools tonight.

Two years ago the board promised to keep Derby open for at least another five years. Last month trustees voted to reverse that decision and include Derby in the latest accommodation review.

Staff is recommending Derby close at the end of the current school year.

"We're going to fight for those remaining two and a half years because we were assured we could plan within those boundaries and we did," says Derby parent Marlissa Nyenhuis.

Nyenhuis adds maybe the decision to reverse was legal according to board procedures, but not ethical. She says the decision has been upsetting for Derby students, teachers and parents.

Bluewater Board Director of Education Steve Blake says the board has 7,000 empty spaces and most parents accept the idea some schools have to close.

The ARC meeting tonight in Owen Sound is at OSCVI starting at 7pm.
