Council Request for Tech Cash Referred to Budget

A request from the Western Wardens for $20,000 dollars for Huron County's share of the on-going SWIFT or South West Integrated Fiber Technology plan to bring broadband to all of Southwestern Ontario has been referred to budget.

CAO Brenda Orchard explains Councillors had asked for an accounting for all of the funding spent so far dating back to the beginning of the project in 2012.

That information was presented to council this week and will be part of the budget deliberations. Orchard adds Councillors are still concerned about the inclusion of local Huron County providers in the SWIFT plan.

They point that Huron County has been very well served by its local providers and want to make sure that continues.

Councillors had also expressed some concerns that more than 90 per cent of the funding so far has been spent on consulting fees but Orchard explains that's normal given the nature of the project and the challenge of identifying what technology will work over a very large area.
