Suspected Drowning South of Bayfield - SIU Investigates

A suspected drowning in Lake Huron, south of Bayfield, is the subject of an investigation by the province's Special Investigations Unit.

Huron OPP officers responded to a report of a distraught woman in the lake, just before 6:00 last evening. Police and family members located the woman about 100 feet from the shoreline, but they were unable to rescue her in the rough water.

The Canadian Coast Guard, U.S. Coast Guard helicopter, and an area Fire Department were activated to search.

The 32-year-old woman was found in the water at 7:20 and was rushed to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The OPP notified the SIU which has invoked its mandate. As a result the OPP will not be able to provide any further information.
