Huron County Looks for Shared Service Opportunities

Sharing services appears to be the model of the future for Huron County and its nine member municipalities.

County C-A-O Brenda Orchard explains a recent workshop on sharing services was very well attended by council and senior staff from the county and all nine municipalities.

Orchard says the goal was to look at how they could reduce costs and improve service by sharing municipal services.

She points out that doesn't necessarily mean sharing with the county but could be two or more municipalities sharing a building official or a fire chief.

Orchard says they were able to identify 42 possible targets for sharing on the first day and whittled that down to ten on the second day that they felt could be addressed in the near future.

Orchard pointed out it was important to focus on projects that could be done in the next three to five months to build some momentum going forward

She says issues like county-wide broadband and a new approach to economic development are already being addressed. Orchard adds a summary of the workshop including the list of the full 42 targets will be presented at a future council meeting.
