Bluewater Board Makes Plans For Possible Teacher Strikes

The director of Education for Bluewater District School Board says schools could close if elementary teachers continue to escalate job action.

Contract talks between the province and elementary teachers are at a standstill.

The Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario is ramping up its work-to-rule job action. That could include one-day rotating strikes at various boards in the province.

Director of Education Steve Blake says if teachers walk out at the Bluewater board, schools could be closed if the safety of students was at stake.

"If we were in a position where we could not maintain the safety and security of our students and staff that would be a trigger for us to close," says Blake.

Blake obviously hopes it doesn't come to that. But local boards have no control over the issues discussed at the provincial level between the province and the teachers.
