South Bruce OPP says the grandparent scam has a new twist that uses contact lists hacked from email accounts.
The Canadian Anti Fraud Centre says scammers used to call grandparents claiming a grandchild is in trouble and needs money wired immediately.
Now the emergency pitch is being sent to the contacts on hacked accounts.
The scam usually involves a story that the victim needs money. The so called victim could claim to be stranded while travelling, or in a car accident, or they lost all of their money and ID.
Police urge residents to verify unsolicited contacts before responding, especially if it involves an urgent requests for funds.
