Fundraising Going Well for Owen Sound Fire Victims

The Owen Sound community is rallying around the 41 people affected by a series of deliberately set fires.

Bruce Grey United Way President Francesca Dobbyn says they've raised about $50,000. The Eva Leflar Donor Advised Fund through Community Foundation Grey Bruce has kicked in a $10,000 donation to help the displaced families.

Dobbyn says many of the 15 families have nothing left, and eight families had no insurance.

She says it's hard to estimate how much the victim's will need, but insurance would start with $30,000 per person.

"A lot depends on first and last (months rent) and what we can find in terms of accommodation. the have to absolutely replace everything and cash enables them to get new, rather than used, and pick out what they want," she says.

Three suspects are in custody and have been charged in connection with the arson incidents.
