Wingham Man Facing 44 Charges

A North Huron resident remains in custody after police tracked him down hiding out at a cabin on Huron-Bruce Road.

Huron County OPP officers received information Tuesday that a wanted male had broken into a cabin and was taking shelter there.

Just after 3:30 Wednedsay morning,  officers from Huron OPP, South Bruce OPP and the Wingham Police Service converged on the property and set up containment.

Officers were able to instruct the male over the phone to walk out of the cabin and turn himself over to police.   After some discussion the male surrendered.   He was placed under arrest for the outstanding warrants and searched.

The search allegedly turned up knives, a small quantity of marijuana, drug paraphenalia and prescription medication that was not prescribed to him.

In addition, he allegedly failed to comply with conditions of his probation orders and recognizance.

27-year-old Michael Benninger of Wingham faces 44 criminal code charges including break and enter, mischief under $5,000, possession of cannabis marijuana, 30 counts of failing to comply with a probation order, and 11 counts of failing to comply with a recognizance.

He remains in custody with an upcoming court appearance at the Ontario Court of Justice in Goderich.
