Stratford police have launched T911 to enhance the emergency service for deaf, hard of hearing, and speech impaired residents.
Stratford police join Waterloo Regional, Guelph, and Brantford police services in launching the program in association with the Canadian Hearing Society.
It allows people to use text messaging to connect with 911 so they are not limited to using a TTY machine installed at their home.
The new service became live this week with expectations it will enhance personal safety and 9-1-1 access for some residents.
“We are very pleased to establish TEXT with 911 service in our respective communities for individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired,” says Inspector Sam Theocharis of Support Services for the Stratford Police Service. “We are very grateful to all our partners who have been instrumental in bringing this project to fruition and for the ongoing support and input by the members of the Canadian Hearing Society.”
