Minto is going to look at ways to allow residents to keep a few chickens in their backyards.
A proposed set of rules would limit the flock to five, and produce eggs only for use by the owner. The chicken coop would have to be set back 10 meters from property lines, be in the backyard, and be regularly cleaned.
CEO Bill White says health concerns can be addressed through licensing. If health issues arise, the municipality will know where the chickens are being kept.
A public meeting will be held before council makes a final decision.
"We’re seeing more of this," says Mayor George Bridge. "We’re seeing it in Guelph now and other municipalities. People want to have a few chickens in their back yard. They’re like pets. They can be well looked after and get a few eggs."
