Grey County Takes Stand Against Possible Fracking

Grey County Council wants the province to put a freeze on fracking.

Parts of the county have been identified as possible sites for fracking operations.

Fracking is the process of injecting fluid into the ground under pressure to release natural gas. Council voted to ask the province to put a moratorium on the process until further study is done on its environmental impact.

Warden Kevin Eccles says more needs to be known.

"There's not enough known about, not the process of fracking, but the effects of fracking, of what you're putting into the ground, chemicals and whatnot to push the gas and or oil out of the ground and what's the long-term effect," says Eccles.

Eccles says he's not aware of any companies currently interested in using the fracking process in Grey County. But in case it ever happens, Grey County council also wants municipalities to have a say in any possible fracking operations in the future.
