Three medical students are in the Hanover/Walkerton area, learning more about rural medicine.
They've just completed their first year at the Schulich School of Medicine at the University of Western Ontario in London. They've been brought to the area by the Walkerton-based MedLincs program and are shadowing doctors in hospitals and clinics.
Ian Eckensweiller is a Hanover native. He believes the six-week program will ultimately improve his skills as a doctor.
"I hope to have a better understanding of rural medicine in general but I'm also hoping to improve upon my medical skills, to make use of those and to implement some of the knowledge that I've learned throughout my first year of medical school," says Eckensweiller.
Arlan Walsh is from Alvinston, in the Sarnia area.
"I have this idea that I want to practice medicine in a rural setting, but I want to get some experience and see what it's actually like and so far it's been absolutely amazing," says Walsh.
The third student is Joel Phillips of Georgetown.
The three students will also organize a week-long medical camp for high school students in Bruce and Grey to inspire them to pursue careers in health care.
