Perth Wellington MPP Worries About Ontario Retirement Pension Plan

The Conservative MPP for Perth-Wellington wants to hear from employers and employees about the Ontario Retirement Pension Plan.

Randy Pettpiece hosted a public meeting at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex Wednesday, to share more information about the ORPP.

Guest speaker and fellow MPP Vic Fedeli says the plan to impose a new payroll tax of up to 1.9 percent has caused tremors in the business community.

Because of the ORPP’s 40-year contribution time frame, it is expected that many of those forced to contribute to the plan will never see the benefits.  Fedeli says that means the government gets to keep the money collected, and not someone’s estate.

Pettapiece is asking employers and employees to send him their views.

“I’m planning to deliver your feedback directly to the associate minister of finance in the days following tonight’s meeting,” says Pettapiece. “But in order to do so, I need to hear from you."

Under the ORPP, the province will require employers to match employee contributions of up to 1.9 percent of earnings.

Employers that provide defined benefit pension plans will be exempt, but most employers will still have to pay into the ORPP, regardless of the retirement savings plans they already provide.
