PSW's Protest at Queensway Home in Hensall

Personal Support Workers took to the street in front of the Queensway Retirement Home in Hensall Monday.

They were protesting layoffs that were announced at the home eight weeks ago and take affect this week.

Union rep Mana Lindsey says the care level in nursing homes has increased over the last few years but staffing has not kept pace and residents are suffering.

Lindsey adds the Queensway home is a private, for profit home but funding for nursing comes from the province.

She says they want to bring the issue to the attention of the public and make people aware that staffing and funding in nursing homes is being cut at a time when it should be increased.

Lindsey says in the past, one PSW looked after ten or eleven residents, but now is responsible for twelve. She says that extra resident increases the workload on the personal support worker as well as reduces the care to the other residents.
