Huron County Clean Water Project Marks Ten Years

This year marks the tenth anniversary of Huron County's Clean Water Project.

The program is funded by the county and administered by the Ausable Bayfield and Maitland Valley Conservation Authorities.

Co-ordinator Susanna Reid explains over the past ten years the program has provided money for projects like de-commissioning manure storage locations, restricting livestock access to water courses, and tree planting for retiring fragile land.

This year, two new programs have been introduced -- a cover crop incentive and a composting toilet category.

The Clean Water Project provides grants to farmers to experiment with different types of cover crops to find out what works best for them.

Over the last ten years, 1,800 projects have been completed with a cost of over $8-million.

Reid says for every dollar the county has invested, landowners have spent $3.70.
