Upgrades Planned For Cove Island Lighthouse

A beacon for boaters travelling between Lake Huron and Georgian Bay is being restored.

The federal government has announced an investment of up to $200,000 to upgrade the Cove Island Lighthouse.

It's located just north of the Bruce Peninsula, in Fathom Five National Marine Park. It's the longest light-keeper-occupied station in Ontario, having been manned continuously from 1858 to 1991.

Plans call for structural repairs to the interior of the former light-keeper’s house and restoration of the stone work of the light tower. Removal of existing lead-based paint and repainting of the lighthouse will also take place.

Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MP Larry Miller has petitioned for heritage status for the Cove Island Lighthouse. That bill is currently under review
