Huron Perth Envirothon Competition

Students from seven high schools in Huron and Perth counties square off Friday at the Huron-Perth Regional Envirothon Competition.

Instead of being in a classroom or a school gymnasium, the 60 students in the competition are at Pinery Provincial Park, south of Grand Bend.

Teams rotate through eco-stations that focus on Forestry, Soils, Aquatics, and Wildlife. They must complete questions that test their knowledge, as well as require practical activities. They must also apply their understanding to solve an environmental scenario.

The winning team will compete at the Ontario Provincial Envirothon Championships May 20-23 at Fleming College, Frost Campus.

There are teams from schools that include Central Huron Secondary School, Goderich District Collegiate Institute, Mitchell District High School, South Huron District High School, St. Anne’s Catholic Secondary School, Stratford Central Secondary School, and Stratford Northwestern Secondary School.

“This event brings together great minds in environmental understanding and issues management,” says Melissa Prout, conservation educator with Ausable Bayfield Conservation. “Students competing in the Envirothon get to be active outdoors, experience nature first-hand, and use their minds as well as their bodies.”
