Bluewater Supports Grape Growers

The Municipality of Bluewater is supporting six growers who are testing different vines and grapes this spring.

The six grape growers are planting test plots with about 18 different varieties to determine which ones stand up best to the Huron County climate.

Ecomonic Development Officer Mark Cassidy says they are trying to form an association that would provide resources to the entrepreneurs and help develop a new agri-business.

Cassidy says it takes about three years to develop a grape that is suitable for wine and another two years for the grape to reach its peak.

The goal is to develop a wine and culinary tourism industry to promote Huron County wines and locally-grown food in local restaurants.
