K2 Wind Looks To Reduce Red Light Annoyance

A spokesperson for the K2 wind energy project north of Goderich says they are aware of concerns of residents in Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh regarding the flashing red aircraft navigation lights on half of the 140 turbines.

Jay Shukin says they're looking at several options to minimize the the impact of the lights but points out they also have to comply with Transport Canada regulations.

Shukin says there are three systems or solutions they're looking at. One is a radar-based system. Another is a visibility-based system that would make the lights brighter in foggy weather but dim them on a clear night. There are also shields that would provide a physical barrier between the lights and the ground.

Shukin adds he can't say exactly when they'll have a system in place but several members of their team are working on a solution.

Several residents in A-C-W have contacted K2 to complain about the lights being a distraction when they're driving.
