Critics Worry Higher Fees Put West Grey New Home Prices Out of Reach

A public meeting on proposed changes to West Grey Development Charges attracted some opposition.

A consultants study suggests the municipality increase the development charge to builders to $5,100 from $3,250.

Local developer Don Tremble says he is against the proposed increase.

Tremble suggests that when capital improvements are needed at local facilities like arenas, the municipality usually asks for donations or receives government grants.

He also questioned where the $2.5-million allocated for a new West Grey police building would go if it is not built within the development charges time line.

Consultant Nick McDonald indicates the money would be reallocated to projects that would benefit the new population.

Jeff Hooper told the meeting that the fee is based on a worst case scenario, and developers will pay now for projects that might not even happen.

Both Tremble and Hooper are concerned about the increasing cost of new construction, which could put a new home out of reach for some people.

Council will consider a development charges bylaw on April 6.
