Southgate Discusses Doubling Development Charges

Southgate is struggling with a decision on how much to charge developers.

A development charges study suggests that the the Southgate portion of the development fees should double. It would go from $7,300 to about $19,500 for an urban residence on services.

If the study is fully implemented, the total charge on an urban residence, including the school and county charge, would be $24,685.

"At this point we can see it will be a challenge for council to arrive at an appropriate balance, looking at some of our costs and who will pay for what costs in the future," says Mayor Anna-Marie Fosbrooke.

But many on council seemed to agree with CAO Dave Milliner who said the increase is too high. Council will discuss the new development charge during budget deliberations next week.
